Since being featured on MeeGoExperts and other tech sites (that Engadgetfella comes to mind) OpenMobile has been shunned into the limelight with its Technology that allows any non-Android / non-iOS device to seamlessly run the approximate 300,000+ Android apps (and counting). Obviously we are looking forward to these apps running on MeeGo and also Tizen in the future.
They have received huge interest from Asia based IVI OEM”s for their technology called the Application Compatibility Layer (ACL). Read on for their Press Release to us:
OPENMOBILE LEADERSHIP IN ASIA
OpenMobile has created a game-changing technology called the Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), that allows any non-Android / non-iOS device to run any of the 300,000+ Android apps at seamlessly. OpenMobile has taken the much more seamless approach to user experience. ACL’s apps run “as native” without performance penalties and for a user running ACL on a MeeGo/Tizen/Ubuntu / QNX/ Symbian device there is no telling the difference between a native app and an ACL app.
Since the first public announcement of ACL by MeeGoexperts, Engadget and many others, we have been blown away by the response from Handset OEM’s and users alike. What has been most surprising, however is the response we have received from IVI OEM’s – your car companies. 6 months ago, IVI OEM”s would tell us “ Android apps are a nice-to-have” but today “ Android apps are a must have”.
The response to ACL has been incredible. We have had 2-3 customer meetings every week, for delivering ACL to IVI systems.
After deep technical due diligence by some of the smartest people and companies in the world, we’ve been invited by many of the world’s leading OEM’s for Handsets and IVI’s to Asia. OpenMobile CEO, Bob Angelo and CTO Zigurd Mednieks will be meeting with decision makers in three different countries in Asia. As you might imagine this is exciting and validates the emerging reality: ACL is a seminal idea that has the power to change the trajectory of the global marketplace by breaking down the App Barrier.
I personally invite you to follow us on twitter #openmobileww, and use #OMACL and please keep writing to us and your OEM’s.
Below is a recap of the Features and Benefits of ACL:
- ACL destroys the App barrier
In a cutthroat marketplace for mobile devices, it is virtually impossible to attract millions
of customers without a vibrant apps ecosystem with hundreds of thousands of apps.
ACL destroys the App barrier and opens up the market for your device with an entire App
ecosystem – on day one.
- ACL for MeeGo is 100% compatible
ACL for MeeGo runs every single Android App – no exceptions. Because it leverages the Android
runtime environment and the Dalvik VM, it runs every app just as it would run on an Android device.
- ACL for MeeGo delivers native performance
All Android apps perform as native on the MeeGo Operating System with zero latencies.
ACL does not drain your device resources. Device power and memory will be unchanged.
- ACL for MeeGo requires zero developer effort
App developers don’t have to modify, recompile or repackage their apps for your MeeGo device.
ACL for MeeGo ensures that every single Android app works on MeeGo with no developer effort or
- Differentiate and drive margins
Businesses need to make a profit and differentiation drives profitability. ACL for MeeGo gives you a
portable Apps Ecosystem. Now, you can differentiate your device at every level to attract customers
and edge competition.
- Full speed 3D graphics
Android apps enjoy the performance benefits of hardware-accelerated OpenGL in your OS
- Android multimedia compatibility
ACL for MeeGo delivers the kernel of the Android runtime to your Operating system, ensuring full
multimedia compatibility without any drain on power or resources.
- Security and sandboxing, keeping apps in their place
Apps launch and run from within their parameters. ACL for MeeGo ensures Apps stay in their place,
eliminating any resource drain that is always required by alternative dual boot solutions.
- Your user experience is on the forefront
ACL is not virtualization or emulation. ACL integrates the Android application runtime into the native
target OS. This puts your user experience in the forefront. Users do not need to switch operating
systems or be cognizant of an emulator environment to access Android apps. Those apps feel native.
- Apps install and launch in their native environment
Users can install and launch in your native environment. They never see or touch any of the Android
- Complete integration of task management
ACL delivers completed integrated task management.
- Cooperating ecosystem with Android’s modularity and inter-process communication
Complete compatibility with Android inter-process communication, enabling multiple apps and
middleware to work cooperatively, as in the native Android environment.
- Android’s Java base and UI classes
A full set of Java base classes and Android-specific classes and APIs, as in the native Android
- Supports Android API Level 4+, NDK6+
