Tizen Samsung Gear 2 / Gear 2 Neo working on Non-Samsung Devices

The Tizen Samsung Gear 2 Smart watch seems to be quite well received by many, with some draws backs, one being the limited number of Smart phones that you can use the Gear 2 / Gear Neo with. For the limited compatible handsets there is a workaround that some have successfully used, but there are some caveats with regards to what does and what does not work.

Heres the information below collated by XDA Developers Member aooga, that was originally geared towards the Gear Fit, but this is confirmed to be working with the Gear 2 / Gear 2 Neo with some changes to the files used.

Instructions:

  • Visit the XDA Developers forum and download the Galaxy Gear Manager app. Current version is 2.0.14031004.
  • Install the .apk file on your Android device. To do this go into Settings - General - Security, and select Unknown Sources. If you do not understand the implications, then please do not do this.
  • Use a file manager to Launch the Downloaded GearManager1_2.apk file.
  • Once Installed try connecting to your Smartwatch. You may need to cancel the connection from your Smart Phone (not the smartwatch), then retry for it to finally connect.

Phones confirmed working:

This following list is for Gear Fit compatibility, but it SHOULD be the same for Gear 2 / Gear 2 Neo:

  • All variants of the M8
  • All variants of the M7
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia SP
  • Moto X

What works:

  • Notifications
  • Clocks
  • Find my Device
  • Heart Rate
  • Reject Calls
  • Media Controls
  • Watchface customizer
  • Pretty much everything

What doesn't work:

  • No Weather
  • No music controller (not player)
  • No WatchOn
  • No SVoice
  • No Schedule
  • Pretty much anything that uses a Samsung Account or Samsung Services

Thanks to hidea for his input on the above.

What next:

XDA Developer aooga is working on the folowing:

  • Samsung services
  • Linking a Samsung account to the application. All help welcome 🙂

    1. JUST synced my Gear 2 Neo with my Sony z3, so far basically every things works, I only imagine the sony z1-z2 would work too. So glad I didn't buy this watch for it to collect dust after I upgraded to Z3

      1. Hello, i have gotten everything working, but everytime I get a call and try to answer on the phone, the call goes to the watch, do you have this issue too? or how did yo fix it?

  1. I tried this with my Xperia Z Ultra and my Gear 1 that is running Tizen and it works like a charm. Had to try several times for a connection but eventually i had success.

  2. i have a nexus 5 and i have error when trying to install samsung manager. already allow unknown source. error: problem parsing the packages. anyone can help?

  3. There is some issue with Nexus 7 and Gear 2. It works fine with installation etc. but when you try to connect, nothing happes - basically both devices are stuck in trying to connect. Any help?

  4. Question, I'm using a Note 3 running Cyanogenmod 11, I've followed all the steps and my Gear 2 Neo won't connect to my gear manager. Is there a way around this? (The caveat of the situation is that I purchased my Neo from a Canadian Target, had a month of use out of it before switching to Cyanogenmod, and now can't return the Neo as target is closing here.

After installing gear manager, I' had the screen for connecting pop up. Once I tried connecting with my Gear, it set me up in a continuous loop.

So it just says' Connecting To Gear. hasn't changed in the 2.5 hours I've left it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂

  5. I was also wondering if this post is current. I have a Sony Xperia Z3 that I would like to pair my Gear 2 Neo with, however I am seeing other articles about this method being outdated? Any help would be great, thanks!

  6. i was wondering if by using this, i can now change my clock face to store or to a download one.. im using Galaxy Core 2.. and i already connect my phone to my Gear 2 neo.. i only wanted to change my clock face to some face in store on in gearfaces.. tia..
