Recently the Samsung Gear 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Gear (Tizen version) have got rooted. Now this opens up more possibilities, and for the seriously tech experts you can do funky things like installing busy box on your Smartwatch.

Instructions

  1. Make sure your device is rooted. The following two methods can be used depending on your Gear model number:
  2. Enable root using the sdb root on command
  3. Download the Tizen busy box package
  4. Install the package using sdb shell on the watch by typing rpm -i busybox-1.17.1-2.3.armv7l.rpm

Now you get a VI (a CLI text editor) on the Smartwatch, one use case is that you can now edit xml and config files directly on your Smartwatch.

Let us know your thoughts in the comment and happy busy boxing !!!!

  1. Ash, I'm getting out of free space (need 188kb) in sdb shell when I run the command. Do you think I have it in the wrong path or any advice?

    1. i believe you need to remount with r/w..... don't forget to remount r/o when finished

      mount -o remount,rw /

      1. Zak,
Doh! Thanks. I used to have a mount command for Android but wasn't sure so that made perfect sense. I got it installed now! Only thing is like Ash points out I see working VI now from sdb shell but no Busybox GUI so it's of limited use. Perhaps if I knew what to do with manually installing Busybox packages more fun could be had but I'll save that for another day.

Thanks for helping me get it installed! Couldn't have done it w/o your tip!

  2. My Gear 2 is rooted but my sdb shell refuses to work. I tried the sdb root on but it says that the command is not found. Yes I have the Tizen stuff all installed.
