Samsung have announced today that they will be making the Tizen based Samsung Gear S available in the U.S. beginning next Friday, November 7. The Gear S brings the functionality of a Smartphone to your wrist with its integrated 3G radio, which can make calls but can also connect to 3G data. The Gear S will be available in both White and Black colors on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. You will be able to also be able to grab the Gear S at Samsung Experience Shops in Best Buy.

Pricing

  • AT&T - $199 on a two year contract, Launching Novermber 7
  • Sprint - $384 without a contract or $16 per month on a two year contract, Launching on November 7
  • T-Mobile - $349 without a contract, or $14.58 over 24 months, Launching on November 9
  • Verizon - TBA

At $349 outright or at $14.58 per month on a two-year contract, T-Mobile would be selling the Tizen-based Gear S smartwatch at the cheapest price. T-Mobile is also offering a special $5 per month plan for unlimited data and texting with up to 500 MB of data. Verizon is yet to announce its rates for the Gear S.

“Samsung continues to shape the wearable category with advanced technology and new experiences,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America and Samsung Electronics North America Headquarters. “A growing developer ecosystem will further expand the capabilities of the Gear S with fitness tracking services like Nike+ Running and on-wrist turn-by-turn navigation from HERE and more.”

With the recent delay to the release of the Gear S in the UK, many of our readers feared this would mean long delays for the US market. Below is a video of my hands on with the LOVELY Gear S at the recent Tizen Developer Summit in Shanghai.

  1. I am about to purchase the new Gear S (the very moment it comes out!), it will be my first smart watch. I am unfamilar with the Tizen apps and was wondering how the watch might be able to interface with the apps on my Note3. E.g., if I get a good for enterprise account to access my work calendar and email on the Note 3, will I be able to then also access those emails on my smart watch on the tizen platform?

    1. I heard if you're willing to root it, it will run Android apps. if not I'm sure Samsung has apps to seamlessly interface with your Samsung phone

      1. I don't think Android apps on Tizen devices are quite there yet. The original Galaxy Gear could when it was on Android. But not now that it is on Tizen they cannot be sideloaded. That said, I don't miss them because they are right there on my phone and I still get their notifications, if I want them.

    2. I use my Galaxy Gear running Tizen with my work email and calendar. MS Exchange. It has become a key part of my work routine. It works flawlessly.

I am in meetings daily and the reminders are wonderful. I can view my agenda on the watch, and even ask it by saying "what's my schedule?"

I have no doubt that you will find it to be an essential part of your day. I am in court regularly and don't want to look like a jerk whipping my phone out all of the time. I just check notifications on my watch and leave it at that.

You probably won't be able to reply to email if you don't use the stock email application on your phone. I cannot, for example, reply to Gmail or Hangouts messages from the watch but I don't use those for work.

I am very hands off with my watch now. At first it was part toy and part tool, but now my Galaxy Gear is 100% work tool. And it is great!

      1. Awesome, good to know. I am counting the days until November 9th and I can finally get my hands on it!
