Samsung are getting ready for the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 event and are sending out Press Invites. This is an Annual event that is held in Las Vegas where Samsung are expected to showcase lots of their upcoming tech to the tens of thousands of attendees. The Korean giant is likely to show off their upcoming Smart home household appliances like TVs, robot vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, ovens, etc. Traditionally bigger Mobile Smartphone announcements are reserved for Mobile World Congress (MWC) or IFA later in the year.
The great news for us is that these devices are becoming Internet of Things (IoT) enabled with the capacity of being able to connect to each other, share data and also be controlled from a central hub. The devices can communicate using several different methods: direct communication between devices, SmartThings SmartHub (acquired for $211 million in 2014), and Smart TV with Integrated SmartThings Intelligence.
Samsung has also predicted that by 2017 all their televisions will be IoT devices, and within the next five years all Samsung hardware will be IoT-ready. Gartner's also predicted the number of IoT devices in the world would boom to over 20 billion by the year 2020. This is where the SmartHome and the world of IoT seamlessly Integrate, with the ability for consumers to remotely interact and control them.
What Operating System (OS) will all these devices be running? Interestingly enough Samsung have recognised that they require a fast, versatile, and low weight OS that can be developed to run across multiple platforms. Samsung has direct access to the Tizen source code and therefore can develop as they wish as a Linux Foundation Project. The Samsung press conference will be held on January 5, 2016 at the main pavilion of CES 2016.
