Today, we have some great news for wearable music lovers as Spotify, the popular music streaming and discovery service, has released its native Spotify app for the Samsung Gear S2 / S3 devices. Using the app you can effectively remote control Spotify on your mobile for FREE.

You can listen to their full catalogue of music and play any artist, albums, or playlists on shuffle mode. If you use Spotify premium then you can play any song you wish directly on either WiFi or 3G/LTE with no Ads that can disrupt your listening pleasure. Spotify is one of the big apps that were named as coming soon at the launch event, so it is great to see it being released.

The app lets you choose from Recently played, Your Library, Browse new releases, Top lists, Generes & Moods. If you don't find what you're looking for you then you can also choose from your own Playlists.

When you are in Play mode you can rotate the bezel which allows you to skip to the next or previous track depending on what direction you rotate it in. A great feature is that the once you start playing the song, and then press the back button to browse other music the current song minimizes to the bottom of the screen, which means you can easily return to it. Simple, but damn effective.

Whilst playing a track you have a symbol with three dots on it at the bottom of the screen, which once pressed give you further options of shuffle, save, repeat and volume. I have to say that this is the first time I've actually used the Spotify service and I'm very impressed how well it marries with a wearable app. Get downloading now from the Galaxy Apps Store via your Gear Manager App.

Another music service that we have recently covered is Wammer, which is a music hub designed for Samsung devices that run the Tizen Operating System. It is not currently available to download at the moment but hopefully will be soon. Keep following Team Tizen for all the news.

Does the app perform how you expected it to? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. I have spotify premium. Why cant I select songs from my playlists? I have to keep pressing next to get the song i want.

  2. My watch disconnected from bluetooth and reconnected and Spotify is stuck at the screen that says no bluetooth detected. I tried everything except restarting my watch to get it going again...meh

  3. Yeah there are a few bugs for sure - mine starts to play from the watch speaker after I get new notifications. Even if the App is fully closed it seems to play again. I then need to open sporify again and hit pause. This happened when I closed Spotify while it was playing.

  4. I would appreciate if the app could download songs to the internal memory for offline listening. I'd like to use the watch for running without a phone, but the LTE version is not sold in Europe. Even if it was, online streaming over LTE would be a big battery drain and the battery is already sucked by the GPS locating while I'm running.
Besides that, the app looks nice, thank you for the effort!

      1. I read somewhere they are opening it up to geographical areas separately. Also heard USA only.

    1. You have to wait for the Newest S2 Update which Installs Gear S3 features such as Maps etc. Once you download and install the upcoming newest update, go to your gear App store and you will see Spotify, iheartradio and all the apps for the Gear S3. I use T-Mobile Gear S2 and Just got the update and downloaded the spotify app

    2. Turn off the phone, remove your simcard, turn it back on again, clear cache/data of "Samsung Apps", then run Samsung Apps via Hola VPN (free on the Play Store) via USA.

      You're welcome 🙂

        1. But if you're outside the USA like me, you still need to follow the steps I posted to see the app 🙂

  5. For those who dont see Spotify or iHeartadio on the app store, You have to wait for the Newest S2 Update which Installs Gear S3 features such as Maps etc. Once you download and install the upcoming newest update, go to your gear App store and you will see Spotify, iheartradio and all the apps for the Gear S3. I use Tmobile Gear S2 and Just got the app and I just downloaded the spotify app

  6. Is spotify a standalone -meaning i don't have to carry my cell to use it on my Gear s2-4g? Miss Milk radio because i didn't need to drag my cell with me. Kinda defeats the purpose.

    1. Yes it is a Standalone app. You don't need your cell phone to use it as long as your watch has Wi-Fi connectivity or a cellular plan. There is No Offline mode though. You can also control your music from the watch from your PC or Tablet from the Cloud like any other Spotify Device. I DO recommend getting T-Mobile as your service Provider. T-Mobile has Music Freedom so any Streaming you do on Spotify or iHeartRadio will NOT count towards your data usage. Also, you MUST have Spotify Premium.

  7. Unfortunately, offline modus is not working. The gear is disconnect (bt) to my Oneplus 2. I`m not able to send the music content from the gear Software to the gear s3. The downloaded songs in spotify are not synchronize with the gear software. Bad solution....

    1. The SPOTIFY app was NEVER MADE to be used offline in the FIRST Place. Or at least at Release. You MUST have Spotify Premium and a Active Internet connection rather it be Wifi 3G 4G LTE or Bluetooth

      1. I have Spotify premium. I have downloaded the files to my smartphone. I´m not able to send the music files to the S3. I´m not able to build up the bt connection from the spotify app of the Gear S3 to the smartphone to synchronize the music files.

  8. I have a Gear S2 that has been upgraded to the most recent update. I cannot find the Spotify app in the Samsung App store. What is wrong?

    1. Turn off the phone, remove your simcard, turn it back on again, clear cache/data of "Samsung Apps", then run Samsung Apps via Hola VPN (free on the Play Store) via USA.

  9. This app is not ready fro prime time. So many bugs and its idiotic inability to play via bluetooth means it's gone. Let me know when they get it right.
