Watchfaces for Gear smartwatches, like the Gear S, S2, S3 and Fit 2, is an exciting place to be. Recently, we have caught up with two watchface designers Mike Wickens and also Denis Miroshnikov to learn a bit more about them and also their journey of developing these types of apps.
Today, we catch up with another designer by the name of Ayla Gokmen. She has a stunning collection of faces and has also recently launched her new website. Read on for all the information and a potential giveaway at the bottom of the page 😉
Ayla, what is your background?
My area of expertise is graphic design. I have been designing for advertising agencies, beverage companies and banks since 2004. Currently I’m working as an art director for an information technologies company. I had the opportunity to work for well-known companies like Coca-Cola, Fanta, Burn, Tuborg and Cappy. The most wonderful side of my job is seeing my designs everywhere and it fills me with proud. Having been trained in 3D visualization and animation, I started supporting my designs with live 3D effects. I’m still developing my design skills day by day.
How long have you been designing watchfaces for?
I’ve been developing watchfaces for a year. A friend of mine who has a Samsung Galaxy Apps Seller Account once asked my help for graphics designs. He indicated that even if the technical processes seems easy, the crucial point is creating high-quality, distinctive and original designs. After getting good and encouraging feedbacks I decided to involve myself in developing watchfaces.
How many watchfaces have you created and how often do you create them?
As of now, I have almost 200 watchfaces available on Samsung App Store for Samsung Gear S2, Gear S3 and Gear Fit2. Creation time depends on how complex and detailed my design idea is. Sometimes it takes about 1 week, and sometimes it takes up to 1 month. I have no special schedule. I work on my designs after working hours whenever I feel like it.
How hard do you find creating Watchfaces for Gear Smartwatches?
I design meticulously, considering many things even if this makes the job difficult. I’m trying to develop customizable, informational and functional watchfaces to enhance the aesthetics of Samsung watches. What I mostly care in my designs is, the design should be well-balanced, regular and visually appealing. While developing watchfaces I try to combine traditional watch design with the functionality presented by Samsung watches. Some of my designs were number one for weeks in my country’s best list. This, motivated me most to work harder.

What are you looking forward to in 2017?
The future is exciting indeed with IoT technology seeping in everywhere. Our lives are becoming easier and more opportunities are appear everywhere. The latest and, supposedly, greatest of technological innovations that awe people around the world – smart watches and wearables. In summary, the future looks bright. Smart watches are a great prospect that will make our lives easier in every possible way.
On the other hand, as a graphic designer, I hope to make some improvements on Gear Watch Designer to make watchface designs more aesthetic and realistic. Changeable hand colors, adding weather conditions, supporting 3D files, alternatives for lights and shadows can make Samsung watches more traditional and functional.
