Samsung unveiled the Bixby virtual assistant just about two months ago, with the virtual assistant making its debut on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The Korean tech giant did say that Bixby wouldn’t be for smartphones alone but would over time become available on its range of home appliances. That time has now come, sooner than we anticipated.
Samsung on Sunday announced that it has started pre-loading Bixby on its latest smart Family Hub 2.0 refrigerator. Bixby will hit the Family Hub refrigerator via a software update that has started rolling out to all shipped Family Hub units. The software update brings AI compatibility.
This new development is coming on the heels of the recent unveiling of new smart home products by rivals Amazon and Microsoft. There are speculations that Samsung will put the AI on all its consumer products in order to stay ahead of its competitors.
The Bixby digital assistant learns by analyzing user voice commands and, according to a Samsung representative, equipping the Family Hub 2.0 with Bixby would make the smart refrigerator able to provide services that would set the Family Hub apart from any other refrigerator. This is an added feature which would make the Family Hub 2.0 smarter.
Samsung hinted last year that Samsung Pay would come to the refrigerator, making it easy to order groceries and pay for them right from your kitchen. Now, with the addition of Bixby smart assistant and its deep learning algorithm, the Family Hub can control temperature automatically and recall recipes based on user eating habits. Users can also now search for recipes and weather information from the fridge with voice commands. You can find out more from the video below.
