During Samsung’s CES 2018 Press Conference, the company announced that they will be bringing their SmartThings app to their latest wearables. With the app installed you will be able to connect and control your Samsung IoT enabled devices around your smart home. So far CES 2018 has seen an abundance of the Internet of Things and smart home devices.
Your smartwatch can be your controller allowing you to view your thermostat, control your music, change ambient lighting and more through a user interface with simple controls. Your environment is now an extension of your wrist 😉 “We’ve been leading the wearables journey for four years,” said Samsung’s Alanna Cotton, Vice President and General Manager Mobile Computing and Wearables, during Samsung’s CES 2018 press conference.
There was no firm indication of when exactly we can look forward to receiving the app, I’ve already looked, but it seems to be slotted for 2018 – sometime! This isn’t the first time the SmartThings app has been mentioned for Samsung wearables. We first saw the SmartThings app on the Gear S at CES 2014. The next year it was said that the Gear S2 will receive it, but it didn’t, and neither did the Gear S3 the following year. Now, the Gear S3 and Gear Sport have been explicitly mentioned by Samsung as receiving the app, so it seems that this time around the tech giant REALLY wants to keep its word.
“In 2018 we’re taking it to the next level, bringing the SmartThings app to the Gear S3 and Gear Sport. Whether it’s dimming the lights to set the perfect mood for dinner, or setting the house to the ideal 71 degrees before I get home, I’ll be able to control my environment in new ways, right from my wrist.”
Samsung needs to make the SmartThings app a reality and we honestly don’t know why its taken so long, over 3 years, to jump their app from the Gear S to their latest wearables. In this tech segment Samsung need to keep up with the Jones and in this instance the Jones is Apple – the company has already integrated the Apple Watch with Apple’s Homekit home automation solution.
