Samsung's foldable smartphone might not go on sale this year

Sep 12, 2018

The foldable Samsung smartphone isn't a gimmick. It's a real device for which the company has already decided the design and hardware. Samsung has, in fact, even confirmed that it plans to unveil the in-folding smartphone in the next few months, possibly at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in November. However, as much it is saddening to hear for anyone, we might not get to lay our hands on this revolutionary device this year.

Samsung has been openly working on its foldable smartphone for some time now. However, it’s not a one-horse race, with the likes of HuaweiOppoXiaomiLenovo, and LG also developing their own versions of it. Huawei, in particular, is competing head-on with Samsung, and is reportedly aiming to unveil its version of foldable smartphone in the coming months. Amid these reports, Samsung has reiterated its desire to become the first company to launch a proper folding smartphone.

DJ Koh, CEO of the mobile division at Samsung, have confirmed that the phone will be unveiled in the next few months. However, it'll probably be a prototype showcase of the phone only. The company will only be revealing more information about the device’s specs and perhaps show off its design. It doesn't yet seem to be ready to begin mass producing the phone. In fact, Samsung Display, the display manufacturing unit of Samsung, will start placing parts orders from October only. So there's still some time before we see the real-world device from Samsung.

Nevertheless, if not at SDC in November, we should officially see the foldable Samsung smartphone early next year. Probably at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 in January or the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in February next year.

There's no word yet on how much this device is going to cost, but for sure, it'll set you back by some good fortune.
