Samsung has just announced its second smartwatch under the Galaxy brand. Called, Galaxy Watch Active, the device is the successor to the Gear Sport, Samsung's fitness-focused watch from 2017. The Galaxy Watch Active is also all about fitness, and naturally, boasts a number of improvements over the Gear Sport.
Here's a run down of how the two fitness-focused watches from Samsung compare.
Samsung has brought about a significant change in design with the Galaxy Watch Active. The watch comes sans the company's signatory rotating bezel, and also sports a much sleeker look. The screen is curved at the edges. It, however, does keep the two physical buttons on its side. The Galaxy Watch Active also differs from the Gear Sport in terms of screen space. It features a 1.1-inch AMOLED display, compared to 1.2-inch in the Gear Sport.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Watch Active gets the dual-core Exynos 9110 processor, up from Exynos 3520 in the Gear Sport. The RAM and ROM configurations are similar though. However, newer SoC, coupled with smaller screen means Samsung could do with a smaller battery as well, and hopefully without compromising on endurance. The new watch packs a 230mAh battery, down from 300mAh in the Gear Sport. As for the operating system, the new watch runs Tizen 184.108.40.206 while the Gear Sport recently got updated to Tizen 220.127.116.11.
The Galaxy Watch Active also offers better fitness-related functionality. In addition to making improvements in existing fitness features, the watch also gets some new ones. Samsung has introduced a blood pressure monitor with the Galaxy Watch Active. The watch also gets a number of new watch faces that offer faster access to features. It also supports popular third-party apps Under Armour, Spotify and Strava. Both the watches are water resistant up to a staggering 50 meters. The watches come with NFC with for contactless payments via Samsung Pay.
Samsung launched the Gear Sport at a starting price of $300. The Galaxy Watch Active, meanwhile, is priced at $200 only. The watch will go on sale on March 8 and is available in Silver, Black, Rose Gold, Sea Green color options. You can pre-order it today and get a free Wireless Charging Pad.
