Qualcomm, as almost if not everyone knows, is a company that is seen as one of the best chipset manufacturers in the world. The company also has relations with another household name, Samsung. So we know that this company is a big deal. Now, we suspect that there is a new wearable chipset coming soon - the Qualcomm Snapdragon 3300.
The news of this chipset was first discovered in July earlier this year. This was when Qualcomm had two chipsets in the prototyping stage. There were rumours that these chipsets were going to be the Snapdragon Wear 2700 and the Snapdragon 429 Wear. Now, thanks to a tip from an XDA Recognized Developer, we know that Qualcomm is basing a chipset off of the Snapdragon 429 mobile platform but is much more likely to be named the Snapdragon Wear 3300.
As you may also know, Qualcomm uploads the Linux kernel source code for its various chipsets over on the Code Aurora Forum. From there, people could see that a commit was uploaded that adds a device tree for a “SDW3300 device.” As well as this, the code indicates that this chipset has been code-named "Spyro."
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 3300 - code-named "Spyro", is going to be based off of the Snapdragon 429. The Snapdragon 429 was introduced in the middle of last year. It is a 12nm chip with 4 ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores. These cores clocked up to 1.9GHz.
Qualcomm may pair these CPU cores with a low-powered co-processor. As well as this, it could be paired with a PMIC and an integrated DSP. Compared to the Snapdragon 3100, we hope that this chipset should be more power-efficient.
Let's get back to reality for a second. Qualcomm still haven't made any official announcements about this new chipset. So, everything is still a rumour - we'll update when we get any juicy information about the Snapdragon 3300.
